The Continental Paleoecology Laboratory was founded in 2006 by Pr. Michelle Garneau and is supervised by Hans Asnong. The laboratory has a diversified client base in the academic sphere as well as in governmental, parapublic and private sectors. Research fields of the laboratory clients include geography, environment, geology, biology and archeology, etc. The laboratory mission in paleoecology is i) to train undergraduate and graduate students, ii) to take part in cutting edge research and iii) to serve external clients.
We do content analyses of testate amoebae, pollen, and vegetal and animal macroremains, and of organic matter in different types of organic and inorganic sediment from peatlands, coastal marshes, lakes, archeologic soils, etc. The laboratory has also developed an expertise in greenhouse gas measurements and is equipped with instruments to measure them on-site (CO2 et CH4) and in air and water samples (CH4) with a gas chromatograph.
The current projects in the laboratory are related to paleoecology, the carbon cycle and the modern surface dynamics of peatland greenhouse gases, natural continental ecosystem paleobiogeography, paleoclimatology, organic sediment biogeochemestry, paleohydrology, etc.
