The stable isotopes geochemistry laboratory of the Geotop-UQAM research center is located in downtown Montreal, on the Université du Québec à Montréal campus. Founded in 1967 by Professor Claude Hillaire-Marcel (still the scientific director), the laboratory is managed by Dr. Jean-François Hélie.

We provide service to academics as well as to government agencies, parapublic agencies and the private sector. Research fields of the laboratory’s clients include geology, biology, environment, geography, and kinanthropology. The laboratory’s mission in the field of stable isotope geochemistry has been threefold for more than 30 years: i) to train undergraduate and graduate students, ii) to participate in cutting edge research and iii) to serve external clients. We mostly analyse stable isotopes of hydrogen (1H, 2H), oxygen (16O, 18O), carbon (12C, 13C) and nitrogen (14N, 15N), on a variety of organic and inorganic samples. The laboratory is currently involved in a wide range of research projects including: paleoclimatology, physical effort, ocean biogeochemistry, ocean circulation, hydrological and biogeochemial tracing in large rivers, carbon cycle in wetlands, soil biogeochemistry, paleonutrition, ancient population migration, detection of fraud in the food industry, etc.

For information relating to sample submission, please contact Dr. Jean-François Hélie by e-mail at helie.jean-francois@uqam.ca or by phone at (514) 987-3000 ext. 2413. All sample submission need to be accompanied by a sample submission sheet found under the Forms menu.
