Les processus qui agissent sur les différents systèmes terrestres laissent des traces géochimiques de leurs actions. Pour cerner la présence et l’intensité de ces processus dans le passé et de nos jours, ma recherche exploite la persistance de cette mémoire dans les archives géologique (roches plus ou moins anciennes) et la capacité unique des isotopes stables à la faire apparaître.

Mes récents sujets de recherche sont variés et s’étendent de l’étude des gaz traces atmosphériques qui contrôlent la capacité d’habiter la planète à l’étude des fluides crustaux de grandes profondeurs impliqués dans le métamorphisme et la construction de montagnes. De nouvelles recherches utiliseront des mesures de haute précision de concentrations isotopiques en oxygène (16O, 17O, 18O) et en soufre (32S, 33S, 34S, 36S) pour

i) examiner la biogéochimie microbienne sous une atmosphère anoxique (sous oxygénée) archéenne (> 2,5 milliards d’années),

ii) pour contraindre les fluxes de masse dans le cycle géologique du soufre au Phanérozoïque (540 millions à 2,5 milliards d’années) et

iii) pour rechercher les processus qui contrôlent les oxydants polluants et nettoyants (OH, O3) dans l’atmosphère moderne.
