Don étudie la géochimie des processus volcaniques et ignés en laboratoire. Ses travaux visent à élucider la structure, les propriétés thermodynamiques et de transport (diffusion et viscosité) des liquides silicatés, et à appliquer les résultats à l'investigation des éruptions volcaniques et à la pétrogenèse des roches ignées.

Avec des collaborateurs internationaux, Don étudie le rôle des volatiles dans les systèmes volcaniques et sur leurs mécanismes d'éruption, la structure et la thermodynamique des liquides silicatés, le fractionnement des éléments en trace entre cristaux et liquides, l'effet des volatiles sur la viscosité des liquides, et le fractionnement des éléments entre les liquides silicatés et sulfurés.

Ses projets futurs incluent des mesures de diffusion dans les liquides silicatés à haute pression, l'étude spectroscopique in situ de liquides à températures et pressions élevées, et la détermination du fractionnement des volatiles entre les liquides silicatés et des minéraux nominalement anhydres.
