Selenopemphix quanta, un kyste de dinoflagellé commun le long de marges continentales.
Le thème général de mes travaux de recherche s'articule autour des changements océanographiques, climatiques et environnementaux dans les milieux marins de moyennes à hautes latitudes à l'échelle des derniers milliers d'années.
Mon programme de recherche consiste en grande partie à étudier les assemblages de microfossiles organiques comme bio-indicateurs des conditions environnementales. En particulier, j'apporte une attention soutenue aux relations qui lient la distribution des assemblages de kystes de dinoflagellés (algues unicellulaires) et les conditions hydrographiques et environnementales, l'objectif étant de développer des fonctions de transfert à des fins de reconstitutions paléocéanographiques. Parmi les paramètres que l'on tente de reconstituer quantitativement figurent les température et salinité, donc la densité, ainsi que le couvert de glace de mer. Or, ces paramètres jouent un rôle déterminant sur la circulation thermohaline des océans, les flux de chaleur latitudinaux et les bilans d'énergie à l'interface océan-atmosphère. Le programme de recherche vise ainsi à élucider des questions fondamentales concernant la dynamique de l'océan et du climat selon des échelles de temps millénaires et séculaires.
De façon plus spécifique, 4 volets principaux occupent mes activités de recherche.
Une reconstruction circonstanciée des températures et salinités de surface de l'Atlantique Nord au cours d'intervalles paléoclimatiques clefs (127-115, 9, 7.5 et 6 ka) marquées par des conditions plus chaudes que que celles de l'actuel a été entreprise, notamment dans le but de tester les résultats de simulations numériques du climat.
Une étude des variations du couvert de glace de mer de l'Océan Arctique au cours de l'Holocène (derniers 10 000 ans) est en cours avec pour objectifs de déterminer ses relations avec le cycle hydrologique de l'Atlantique Nord.
Un projet vient d'être amorcé le long des marges orientales du Pacifique Nord. Ce projet de long terme implique une analyse de la distribution moderne des microfossiles organiques et permettra d'aborder des problèmes d'upwelling et de productivité, en plus de donner lieu à des comparaisons des enregistrements paléoclimatiques et paléocéanographiques à une échelle hémisphérique (soit, Pacifique vs. Arctique vs. Atlantique).
Enfin, un dernier volet concerne plus particulièrement l'utilisation des microfossiles organiques comme bio-indicateurs environnementaux dans les milieux marins côtiers ou estuariens (e.g. estuaire du St-Laurent ou fjords de Colombie Britannique).
