Thèmes de recherche

Mes recherches s'appuient sur la synergie de deux axes complémentaires: 1) l'un "vertical" visant à comprendre la réactivité géochimique de composés organiques spécifiques dans des environnements contrastés, comme par exemple les composés ligneux et les sucres, et 2) l'autre "transversal" appliquant ces connaissances à la compréhension de la dynamique de problématiques environnementales complexes comme l'exposition de populations aux métaux lourds ou la production de gaz à effet de serre depuis des milieux aquatiques perturbés (coupes forestières, réservoirs). Je dirige pour l'instant l'ambitieux programme PLUPH (Poor Land Use, Poor Health) visant à instaurer à une échelle régionale des pratiques agro-forestières durables en Amazonie brésilienne. Pour encourager l'adoption de ces pratiques, nous prônons le levier que constituent l'exposition au mercure et la transmission de la maladie de Chagas, deux problèmes de santé exacerbés par le déboisement intempestif de la forêt tropicale humide. Je suis aussi le chercheur principal du projet SABRE (Salix en Agriculture pour des Bandes Riveraines Énergétiques), qui vise à évaluer l'efficacité de bandes riveraines pour limiter les transferts d'engrais chimiques et de pesticides depuis les champs de maïs ou de soja de la plaine du St-Laurent vers les cours d'eau.
