My research programme concerns:
-
the energy budget and thermal regime of the earth's lithosphere,
-
the mechanical properties of the continental lithosphere, and
-
their relationships to the formation and evolution of the continental lithosphere.
In order to study the thermal regime of the continents, I collect and interpret heat flow and heat production data. These data are also useful to interpret the seismic velocity anomalies beneath the cratons revealed by tomography.
I study the relationship between gravity and topography to determine the overall strength of the continental lithosphere and to relate them to geological observations. I use numerical models of lithospheric deformation to relate the strength of the lithosphere to its physical properties and to the presence of faults.
I am using the temperature depth profiles measured for heat flow studies to detect signs of climate changes. These studies show the warming of the past century as well as effects due to the conditions at the base of the ice sheet during the last glaciation.
