MSc or PhD position - Sea ice dynamics in the Hudson Strait - past, present, future

As part of the ArcticNet multidisciplinary project entitled « Qajartalik: cultural legacy and environmental change in coastal Nunavik », we are seeking an MSc or PhD student to explore the dynamics of the sea-ice cover in the Hudson Strait area. The project will combine direct and satellite observations, data compilation, analysis and modelling, with a focus on freeze-up and break-up dates. Sea ice freeze-up and break-up are determinants in the length of the primary productivity season and, more broadly, marine ecosystems and marine resources. For Inuit communities, the presence or absence of sea ice also influences transportation routes and, in turn, livelihoods. In that context, the project objectives are (i) to document the past sea ice cover variations in relation to human occupation and (ii) to develop projections of future trends.

The candidate should have a BSc or MSc in atmospheric sciences, oceanography, Earth sciences, Biology or a related field. The MSc or PhD student will be co-supervised by Bruno Tremblay (atmospheric and oceanic sciences, McGill), Anne de Vernal (Geotop & and Earth and atmospheric sciences, UQAM) and Audrey Limoges (Earth Sciences, University of New Brunswick) and could enroll at McGill, UQAM or UNB.

We offer a minimum stipend of $20,000/year (MSc) or $25,000/year (PhD).

Applications will be evaluated until positions are filled, but we aim for a start before May 2026. For further information and to apply, please contact roy.natasha [at] uqam.ca (Natasha Roy). Applications should contain a brief motivation letter, a curriculum vitae and transcripts of BSc and MSc (if applicable), in addition to the names of two references.
