Résumé / Abstract

Coring and drilling of sediments from floating platforms provide access to sedimentary sequences spanning centuries to millions of years. Microfossil remains in the sediments may serve to document past ocean and climate parameters based on the composition of their assemblages or based on their isotopic/geochemical content. The study of sediment cores from the World Ocean have shed light on the climate history of the Earth, which was marked by the alternation of glacial and interglacial stages since millions of years. However, the Arctic Ocean still represents a frontier. The onset of perennial sea ice in the Arctic Ocean, its impact on climate, and the role of exchanges between Arctic, Pacific and Atlantic oceans, are important challenges to address from the study of marine sediment cores.

What’s up Geotop lectures are made for the students (and/or by students), and aim at providing information on what research is done at Geotop, whom to contact for analyses and maybe present you with some new perspectives. These 20-minute lectures are followed by a discussion period.
