Knowledge of the compositions of these fluids is therefore essential. Unfortunately, direct fluid samples are rare, especially for deep in the Earth and for its earliest history. However, minerals with preserved compositions are readily available, sampling environments to more than 200 km depth and back to at least 4.2 billion years ago. Minerals capture a fingerprint of the associated fluid by element exchange, and in my research I investigate how to read this mineral record. This involves understanding how elements partition among minerals, fluids and melts in experiments from surface conditions to high temperature and pressure; computational modelling of mineral lattices to see where elements reside and how they are accommodated, and in-situ trace element work on natural samples. Quebec hosts economic lithium deposits in pegmatites negating import from elsewhere and its associated energy penalty. The anticipated use of locally sourced lithium is thus highly attractive. However, to find and identify Quebec sourced lithium ores we need to understand the mechanisms behind their formation and what distinguishes them. This results from the extreme differences in element solubility as the physical and chemical properties of the fluid vary (e.g. pH, T, salinity). As a result, fluids have an unequalled ability to selectively mobilise and deposit elements, culminating in the formation of ore deposits. These deposits are almost exclusively confined to eruptive episodes and, therefore, little to no information is usually available for the periods of quiescence that intersperse these eruptions.
