Les activités de recherche menées dans mon équipe sont basées sur deux axes complémentaires : 1) Des aspects disciplinaires sont couverts par des subventions CRSNG-Découvertes. La dynamique des métaux à l’état de trace, de molécules organiques terrigènes et de pesticides dans des environnements naturels et anthropisés est étudiée grâce à des techniques analytiques de pointe dans mon laboratoire de géochimie de l’environnement. 2) Des applications interdisciplinaires sont abordées grâce à d’ambitieux projets de recherche nationaux et internationaux. J’ai dirigé 2 projets successifs CRSNG stratégique en partenariat et 2 projets successifs Innov’Action financés par le MAPAQ. Ces projets sont basés sur une approche écosystémique faisant la promotion des collaborations entre les spécialistes des sciences naturelles, de la santé et des science humaines et sociales.

La plupart des recherches indépendantes sur les aspects environnementaux et agronomiques des herbicides à base de glyphosate (HBG) sont limitées par des difficultés analytiques pour mesurer les teneurs en glyphosate et en son principal produit de dégradation, l’acide aminométhylphosphonique (AMPA). Depuis 6 ans, nous avons réussi à surmonter cette difficulté dans mon laboratoire de géochimie de l’environnement. Nous sommes maintenant en mesure de mesurer les teneurs en glyphosate et en AMPA dans tous les compartiments environnementaux, une performance seulement atteinte dans quelques rares laboratoires dans le monde. Dans le cadre du projet SABRE (SAlix pour des Bandes Riveraines Énergétiques), nous avons montré que la lixiviation d’HBG des sols agricoles vers les cours d’eau avoisinant affectait la biodiversité et les biomasse de plancton. Par ailleurs, des bandes riveraines de 3 m de large, conformément à la politique québécoise, ne règlent pas le problème de contamination. Avec le projet MYFROG (Maintenir de hauts rendements dans les grandes cultures tout en reconsidérant l’option d’utiliser le glyphosate), nous avons mené toute une série de projets de recherche en partenariat avec des producteurs et productrices québécois sur les impacts de l’usage intempestif de HBG et d’applications de biosolides municipaux sur la qualité des grains produits et les fonctions des sols. Nous avons montré que les plantes absorbaient le glyphosate et l’AMPA par leurs racines, et que le glyphosate pouvait se dégrader en AMPA dans les tissus des plantes. Nous avons aussi montré que la qualité nutritive du soja et du maïs tolérant au glyphosate pouvait être affectée par des applications répétées de HBG. Enfin, je développe de nouveaux projets dans le cadre des activités du Réseau Québécois de Recherche en Agriculture Durable.
