Canada is responsible for one-quarter of the world’s peatlands and the world’s largest peatland carbon stock. These carbon-rich wetlands are globally important ‘natural climate solutions’ with valuable biodiversity and cultural co-benefits but remain largely unprotected from industrial development and land-use changes. To ensure peatlands across Canada continue to provide an essential carbon service for global climate, and critical habitat for threatened species, policies for their protection and long-term management are urgently required. WCS Canada’s goal is to work with multiple partners to identify policy options, tools, and actions for peatlands at different governance levels across Canada. Here, we explore some of the challenges in implementing effective policy for peatlands across Canada and potential policy solutions.
