Biogéochimie arctique – Les enregistrements sédimentaires des métaux sont de puissants révélateurs des conditions qui ont prévalu en milieu marin. Traités de façon appropriée, ils aident à comprendre le cycle du carbone car plusieurs métaux répondent de façon variée aux changements d’oxydoréduction qui découlent du métabolisme de la matière organique dans les sédiments. Cette application impliquent toutefois que l’on connaisse bien la géochimie propre à chacun des éléments, et ce, à travers une gamme étendue de conditions environnementales. Nous examinons l’enregistrement du carbone dans les sédiments de la marge continentale arctique, simultanément à la distribution de radioéléments, isotopes stables, molécules organiques et de plusieurs éléments sensibles à l’oxydoréduction (manganèse, fer, soufre, cadmium, molybdène, rhénium et uranium). Nos carottages sont effectués dans le détroit de Davis, à travers l’archipel canadien (passage du nord-ouest), sur le plateau Mackenzie dans la mer de Beaufort, et dans les mers des Tchouktches et de Béring. Les données produites servent notamment à évaluer le rôle de la marge continentale arctique dans le fonctionnement biogéochimique de l’océan polaire, de même que les conséquences du réchauffement planétaire sur les cycles élémentaires à l’échelle de cet océan.

Biogéochimie lacustre – Les émissions industrielles dans l’atmosphère ont grandement augmenté le dépôt d’éléments traces toxiques dans les sédiments des lacs d’Amérique du Nord. Ces éléments peuvent être recyclés dans la colonne d’eau lorsque les conditions environnementales changent. Les solutions pour remédier à ces dégradations de la qualité de l'environnement aquatique sont coûteuses socialement et économiquement. L'élaboration de stratégies efficaces pour résoudre ces problèmes de contamination environnementale dépend donc fortement de notre aptitude à prédire comment des actions correctrices potentielles ou des changements éventuels dans les conditions du milieu vont affecter la qualité de l'eau et des sédiments. Les stratégies sont d’autant plus difficiles à établir que le devenir des contaminants en milieu aquatique est souvent intimement lié aux cycles complexes d'éléments réactifs, en particulier C, S, O, Fe et Mn. Il est donc ardu, voire impossible, d’anticiper intuitivement quel sera, par exemple, l'effet sur les contaminants sédimentaires de politiques de réduction des émissions de SO2 dans l’atmosphère, de l'eutrophisation ou de changements climatiques. À cet égard, nous proposons le développement de modèles de transport-réactions à composants multiples, qui prennent en compte les réactions clés et les processus de transport dans les sédiments. À terme, ces outils permettront de prédire l'altération des cycles des éléments traces sous différents scénarios de changements environnementaux.
