Résumé / Abstract :

The understanding of Quaternary landscape evolution demands to collect pieces of information across palaeo-archives (e.g., terrestrial sediment records). Unfortunately, an easy to assemble picture is not necessarily overall correct. To successful connect findings and to decipher landscape evolution process, stratigraphical markers link archives framed by chronologies.

Luminescence dating is one of the leading numerical dating methods in Quaternary Sciences. Its eventbased character, estimating the last event of daylight exposure of natural mineral grains, allows unique insights in morphological processes that sculpted former landscapes. The presentation will exemplify the relevance of luminescence dating for Quaternary research using two examples from loess records in Germany and coastal dunes in south-west France. Palaeoenvironmental reconstruction is an exhausting task, but luminescence-based chronologies can ensure that the puzzle will finally show the right picture.
