Le thème principal de nos travaux est la matière organique dans tous les environnements naturels. La matière organique est une composante fondamentale de la biosphère et une des sources les plus importantes d’énergie chimique sur Terre. Les composés organiques sont abondants, omniprésents, et ils alimentent tous les processus biogéochimiques sur terre et dans les océans. Nous tentons d’élucider les facteurs qui contrôlent la formation, la composition et la préservation de la matière organique dans les différents compartiments de l’environnement global, de même que les réactions entre composés organiques et inorganiques. Ce thème est une clé de voûte pour la compréhension des cycles géochimiques globaux des éléments essentiels à la vie, de la formation de l’oxygène atmosphérique et des combustibles fossiles, de même que pour l’élucidation des origines et de l’histoire de la vie sur Terre.
